James Grennen is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) in Long Island who has over four decades of financial advisor experience, as well as being a U.S. Department of the Treasury certified Enrolled Agent. IRS Enrolled Agents go through extensive specialized training for a deep professional understanding of the U.S. tax code. Enrolled Agents provide some of the most informed tax opinions in the industry.
Over the years, Grennen’s work has focused on helping individuals, and couples and businesses solve financial problems including those experiencing tax difficulties.
Grennen started out as an advertising copywriter, then held an editorial position with the New York Daily News before entering banking and finance. Reporters follow the money. It usually explains how and why things happen. It was only natural that he developed a strong interest in finance.
James Grennen earned an MBA in Finance from Rutgers University Graduate School of Business in 1979. He then went on to work with Chase Manhattan Bank in their International Operations division, working with their correspondent bank clients.
Mr. Grennen then joined Prudential Securities in 1982. After completing Prudential’s sales training program, he went to work as a financial advisor. For the next 16 years, he worked with clients of all income levels in the financial planning areas of Income Allocation, Risk Management, College Planning, Tax Planning, Retirement Planning and Estate Planning.
On leaving Prudential in 1998, James Grennen founded Grennen Financial Inc. in Bohemia, Long Island, New York. At that company Grennen would continue his work as a financial planner and investment manager, again working with clients of all income levels.
Grennen Financial began doing business as Long Island Tax Resolution Services (LITRS), in 2008 and still running today. LITRS would help people who had gotten themselves in tax jams. The wide variety of tax problems and issues that Grennen worked on, broadened his tax knowledge and expertise.
Being the best Certified Financial Planner in Long Island, Grennen has always relied on a client-centered approach to solving his clients’ financial and tax problems, by helping them reach their life’s goals. His focus has always been on reducing client stress by providing them with analysis necessary to make life’s big decisions. This analysis provides relief to the client and helps the client with life’s big decisions.
With his extensive and broad-based financial advisor experience to offer his clients, Grennen recently started Woodhull Capital Advisors, LLC. Grennen has seen the role of the traditional financial advisor focusing far too much on sales goals and not enough on planning for the long-term life goals of their clients. This why he has chosen to work with his clients as a fee-only advisor, allowing him to keep his focus firmly on the client.
Grennen has held the following securities and insurance industry licenses: Series 3, Series 7, Series 65, and the NY State life and health insurance license. As a fee-only certified financial planner, he is no longer allowed to hold any of these licenses.
Grennen has also held the following certifications at various times in his career (but no longer holds any of these certifications):
- Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) – awarded by the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA)
- Certified Machinery & Equipment Appraiser (CMEA) – awarded by the NEBB Institute
- Certified College Planning Specialist (CCPS) – awarded by the National Institute of Certified College Planners (NICCP)
